About Gialova Lagoon (Divari) Natura 2000 Site

Gialova Lagoon, locally referred to as Divari, is a protected wetland area situated near the village of Gialova in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It forms part of the Natura 2000 ecological network and is recognized for its environmentally significant ecosystem, spanning a shallow brackish lagoon, salt marshes, mudflats, and sand dunes along the Ionian Sea. The lagoon is positioned between sandy beaches and agricultural land, creating a diverse landscape supporting rich biodiversity. Ecologically, Gialova Lagoon is one of the most important wetland sites in southwestern Greece due to its role as a breeding ground and stopover for numerous migratory and resident bird species, including the rare African chameleon and the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). The area supports over 220 species of birds, making it a prime destination for ornithologists and wildlife enthusiasts. Historically, the lagoon’s wetlands have supported local livelihoods through salt extraction and fishing, though current conservation efforts emphasize habitat protection and sustainable tourism. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities such as birdwatching from designated hides, nature walks, and exploring the adjacent Voidokilia beach, known for its near-perfect circular shape and archaeological significance. The site’s proximity to the Navarino Bay and the beautiful coastal scenery enhances its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts and photographers. Gialova Lagoon’s seasonal wetland dynamics create a changing environment that offers different wildlife viewing opportunities depending on the time of year. The site also contributes to scientific research and environmental education in the region, supporting conservation programs aimed at preserving its unique wetland habitats and species.
